This One Is Not about Birds - Promise!

But when you look at the picture you might be forgiven for thinking the opposite.

Out on a photo walk not long ago I spotted a few of these mysterious, wooden objects on tree trunks. A piece of cheese under a right-angle roof? A nesting box for some hitherto unknown extremely small bird? Has somebody just tried out a new drill and different-size drill bits and proudly put it up in the forest? Is it a practice-piece of wood for young woodpeckers? Is it a post box for holding military covert carrier pigeons' little scrolls? Nursery chambers for some insect?

Can somebody please help me? What on earth is this?

the Big Cheese is coming to visit and these are the signposts?
No idea!

Ah, another one of your mysterious observations! Did you ever solved that one with the bicycle wheel around the tree?
This one is very odd indeed, I have no idea off hand, but will be thinking about it and get back to you. :)

Maybe it is some kind of treated wood that attracks tree killing insects and in turn kills them...or it might attract woodpeckers to use it instead of pecking on trees. Very interesting though. :) The Bach

Oreneta, Limningedge, Protege and Bachelor - I have googled and all has been revealed! It is a bug box, for insects like lacewings and ladybirds to hibernate in a snug little place. :-)

Protege - Someone must have put it there when the tree was young. It fell in a storm recently. :-(

I think it's a training board for young woodpeckers! ;-)

I thought it might be a way to stop the wasps from building under the eaves - they were so bad last summer - both the midget and I got stung.

LadyFi - Maybe it is possible to train them from an early age? ;-)

Lynda - They are like a two-edged sword, one good side and one bad side. Doing good in nature but ...ouch!
